Santa Rosa is a city in northwestern California and seat of Sonoma County. The city’s economy is supported by high-technology manufacturing, retailing, and services. Manufactures include electronic equipment, scientific instruments, and fabricated metal. Of general interest are the home, gardens, and grave of horticulturist Luther Burbank; several preserved Victorian homes; and the Robert Ripley Museum, named for the Santa Rosa native and author of the "Believe It or Not!" illustrated newspaper column. The museum is housed in the Church of One Tree, so called because all the lumber used for the building came from a single redwood tree. The children’s museum Discovery Center, several wineries, and a junior college are also located in the city.

The site was named by a Spanish priest visiting on the feast day of Santa Rosa de Lima in 1829. The community was founded in 1833 by General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a California soldier and pioneer. The city incorporated in 1868. With the arrival of the railroad in 1870, the town became a hub of shipping for agricultural products. Burbank established his nursery garden and greenhouse in the city in 1875, beginning a half century of experimentation with fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
