Madbury New Hampshire was a part of Durham and of a section of Dover
known as Barbados, a name resulting from trade between the West Indies and
New Hampshire coastal settlements. The name Madbury Parish was first
recorded in a 1755 grant made by Gov. Benning Wentworth. Gov. John
Wentworth later granted full town privileges in 1768.
Barbados Pond, currently located on the Madbury and Dover town line,
is a reminder of the town’s heritage. Madbury town records reveal that
many of the early settlers were Barbados traders, responsible for building
an incredible number of garrison houses as protection against Indians.
Mallego Brook and Bellamy River, both connected to Bellamy
Reservoir, are notable parts of Madbury’s rural landscape.
Madbury is one of the smallest towns on the Seacoast. Madbury offer
an extensive menu of recreational activities, including cross-country
skiing, fishing and hunting, snowmobiling, and a host of youth sports. The
towns hot spot is Molly O’s Two Restaurant on Rt. 108.
