Mont Vernon, New Hampshire is among the most picturesque of the region's communities. Mount Vernon is a small rural village with an impressive hilltop setting.. The well preserved buildings of the picturesque village center have been designated a local historic district, reflecting a unique and varied history. Beginning with the construction of the Second New Hampshire Turnpike in 1802, Mont Vernon became a center of considerable trade. Five full miles of turnpike ran through the town, supporting a number of taverns as well as businesses and services. In the late 19th Century, Mont Vernon was a prosperous summer resort, attracting a profitable summer trade with its pure air and scenic beauty. Today, the grand hotels have all but disappeared and there is a single general store on Main Street and a very limited commercial district along Route 13. The annual Lamson Farm Day with exhibits and hayrides is a popular local event, held in October.
